The ENABLE CONSORTIUM
is pleased to announce that the design of the ‘wearable system
supporting services to enable elderly and vulnerable people to live
well, independently and at ease’ has been registered with the European
Product Design centre.
This wrist unit is designed for older and
vulnerable wearers to use in and outside the home to support and assist
delivery of social and health care services through a single integrated
system. The innovative programme has produced a modular open system
solution that runs a range of ENABLE services covering the spectrum of
support needs of vulnerable people. This includes falls prevention and
detection, long term condition monitoring, environmental control,
emergency call, medication prompting, life style and quality of life
assessment.
The prototype units are in the form of a wrist worn
device utilising a colour user interface, language independent voice
commands and a simple 5 key operation. At the time of release the
voice operated command function using phonemics accepts instructions in
English, German, Czech and Dutch. The falls detection software has
been specifically designed to detect both hard and soft falls with
multiple sensors measuring a variety of parameters.
The ENABLE
system offers the first integrated social and healthcare device that is
worn by older and vulnerable users in the form of a watch. The project
conducted user surveys, carried out user case analysis and developed
scenario modelling to determine the specifications and functionality
required for development. It is claimed that the features listed
below, provide the first provision of
A wearable Open Systems platform
Integrated social/healthcare applications
Social and healthcare integrated Service Centre
Combined falls prevention/detection in a wrist worn device
Embedded language-independent control application for mobile devices (ASR)
Context sensitive wearable control system for the home environment.
The ENABLE solution is applicable to all existing service provider systems, is configurable to Smart Home and will be available to programme developers and research organisations as well as the implementation through Telehealth Care systems such as the DOC@HOME® also developed with the support of European Funding. ENABLE is a supported project under the EU FP6 IST programme.
The prototype is about to enter the field trial stage in four European member states.
The "integrated Enable prototype system” will be tested by user groups in several European countries till mid year 2010. Please find below the prototypes in pictures
